Heard the sound of a pianola?

Why is this?

In this house, in 1919, there was a pianola and a gramophone that livened up, with music, the moments of conviviality enjoyed by Eddington and Cottingham.

After a reception, with pomp and circumstance, by the elite residing on the island of Príncipe, the travelers stayed four days at this house in Santo António, to which they returned, after a brief visit to Roça Sundy, for another week.

Also try… Imagine yourself on the balcony of this house in 1919.

Eddington recounts, with pleasure, some of the moments spent on the balcony, as well as the behavior of the pets that were there:

The evenings at S. António were very pleasant, sitting on the balcony in cool white clothes, , with the sea just in front of us. (…) Mr. Carneiro has a most amusing little monkey at his house in the city, and it is very funny to see the monkey the cat and the tiny puppy all playing together.

Did you know?

In 1919, the building of the Jerónimo Carneiro family house also housed the branch of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino – BNU and today it is the building of the current branch of the International Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe – BISTP.

This location was strategic for the Carneiro family, as it was between the port of Santo António and the Sundy warehouses.
